For whatever reason, I got a BarlowGirl CD for Christmas. I guess it was somewhere on my wishlist, or maybe I’d mentioned it once. I only knew one song of theirs, “Never Alone.” But now, after listening to it and paying attention to the lyrics, I’m addicted. It’s not so much my style of music, but it’s not bad to listen to. What is striking are the lyrics. They actually write about what it means to be a Christian woman, which is a rare thing in Christian music. And it’s not all about boys and nail polish. I could see myself writing a lot of the same things… the lyrics are very real and honest. That’s what struck me about “Never Alone.” The song says “I cry out with no reply, and I can’t feel you by my side.” That’s a bold statement for a Christian singer to make, the feeling of doubt and aloneness that all of us hate to admit that we experience sometimes. Anyway, I really recommend at least reading the BarlowGirl lyrics, even if you never listen to the CD.
My hands hold safely to my dreams
Clutching tightly not one has fallen.
So many years I’ve shaped each one
Reflecting my heart, showing who I am.
Now you’re asking me to show
What I’m holding
Oh so tightly.
Can’t open my hand; can’t let go
Does it matter?
Should I show you?
Can’t you let me go?
You whisper gently
You say I will be free
I know but can’t you see
My dreams are me,
My dreams are me
Say you have a plan for me
And that you want the best for my life.
Told me the world has yet to see
What you can do with one
That’s committed to your call.
I know of course what I should do
That I can’t hold these dreams forever.
But if I give them now to you
Will you take them
Or can I dream again?
