I’ve ordered a package of 10 white bands from one.org… if you’d like one, you can buy one from me for $1.50.  Unfortunately, they won’t be in until sometime next week.  So you’ll have to get a ribbon or yarn or something for July 1.

The ONE Declaration

WE BELIEVE that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget. WE COMMIT ourselves – one person, one voice, one vote at a time – to make a better, safer world for all.”

July 1 – International White Band Day

July 1 is the first Global White Band Day. Wear a simple white band and show the world that you want action, not just words.

July 1 will see people around the world wearing their white bands and wrapping public buildings in white to send a message to the G8 world leaders that they demand action on trade justice, debt cancellation, and more and better aid. International White Band Day will prove to be one of the largest global actions ever taken.

Who should wear the white band?
ANYONE who believes in ending poverty should wear the white band, and we want as many people as possible to feel part of this movement. This could be school children, campaigners, community groups, celebrities, families; whoever you are, this action is for you.

What should the white band look like?
This is entirely up to you. Some suggestions are wrist bands, arm bands, head bands, lapel bands, etc. This action was chosen because it is simple for anyone to get involved – you can just make your own white band with a piece of fabric.

Do our white bands have to bear a slogan or a message?
Many groups will be organising under a national slogan. India, for example, will be organising the action under the banner of ‘Deliver the Promises’. The UK is organising the action under the banner ‘Make Poverty History’ and that will be written on many of the bands. The United States coalition against poverty is called The One Campaign: www.one.org

The best place to find out if your country has a slogan is on your country page here .

Micah Challenge is a global Christian campaign. Our aims are to deepen our engagement with the poor; and to challenge leaders to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and so halve absolute global poverty by 2015!

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

Isaiah 58:6-12

6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
       to loose the chains of injustice
       and untie the cords of the yoke,
       to set the oppressed free
       and break every yoke?

    7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
       and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
       when you see the naked, to clothe him,
       and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

    8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
       and your healing will quickly appear;
       then your righteousness will go before you,
       and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.

    9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
       you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.
       “If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
       with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

    10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
       and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
       then your light will rise in the darkness,
       and your night will become like the noonday.

    11 The LORD will guide you always;
       he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
       and will strengthen your frame.
       You will be like a well-watered garden,
       like a spring whose waters never fail.

    12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
       and will raise up the age-old foundations;
       you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
       Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
