After almost two years of Toby’s shenanagins, I decided that the best thing for him (and for my sanity) was to get him a companion. He always had so much fun playing with my pastor’s young cat, Melacatones, so I figured he would get along fine with a little brother.
A mama cat and her litter of six kittens showed up in the backyard of the Kotlarczyk family, who attend church with my parents. One weekend while I was in Ferguson for a puppet performance, the Kotlarczyks brought a few of the kittens to church for socialization. They were only about 4 weeks old at that time, definately not ready to leave home. But I had a good time with a little black & white that they called “Baby.”
Three weeks later, the Kotlarczyks were about to leave for Michigan for a few weeks and needed to get all the kittens adopted. I was in town for Strawberry Festival, so I took Toby to pick out a little brother.
I knew I wanted a male, because I’m pretty sure two males will get along better than a male & a female. There were only two males in the litter, Baby, and an all black. I found out that Baby had been the favorite of the Kotlarczyk children because of his friendly & social nature. He had been indoors more than any of the kittens and even slept in Rachael’s bed now and then. He seemed more interested in Toby than the black kitten did. So “Baby” was my choice.
I had already been thinking of names, and Mojo was at the top of my list. The name seems to fit him. He had all the energy of a ska artist, and a quirky personality. He and Toby got along great. Within four days of his adoption, Mojo was pouncing on Toby, trying to initiate a chase. And Toby, though hesitant at first, eventually jumped in with all four feet!
As he’s grown, Mojo has become a cautious, but goofy cat. He’s sensitive about loud noises and anything unexpected. But he’s outgoing when it comes to other cats and animals. He’s made friends with feral cats, he’s been a wonderful uncle toward the various kittens I’ve fostered, and even gets along with small dogs.
He’s a “daddy’s cat” all the way. The Ferg started befriending him early in our relationship by offering snacks. Now the two of them are pretty much inseparable.

Some definitions of mojo:
The word is thought by some to be a derivation of the English word “magic” but may be related to the West African word “mojuba,” meaning a prayer of praise and homage.
The mojo bag is the staple amulet of African-based folk magic practice, a flannel bag containing one or more magical items. Alternative names for the mojo bag include hand, mojo hand, conjure hand, lucky hand, conjure bag, trick bag, root bag, toby, jomo, and gris-gris bag.
Since mojo bags were often used to bring luck in love or money, the word has become connected with the idea of love. If you work your mojo on someone, they will be unable to resist you. As an extention of that, mojo has come to mean any special powers possessed by a person, such as political power, charisma, etc.
Mojo is also used as a euphemism for various narcotic drugs (including morphine and speed) – possibly a reference to their “magical” effects.
In Spanish, mojo (pronounced moho) is a cold sauce made with oil, vinegar, garlic etc.
Mojito (Spanish diminutive of Mojo) is a traditional Cuban cocktail which became popular in the United States during the late 1980s, and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity. A mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients: mint, rum, powdered sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime, and club soda. Its combination of sweetness and refreshing citrus and mint flavors are intended to mask the potent kick of the rum, and have made this clear cocktail a popular summer drink.

Pets at College: An Idea That Might Not Make the Grade
PLEASE think twice (three times, or ten times!) about getting a dog or cat while in college. I know, I know, I did it. But it was NOT a wise decision. I love Toby, but I should have waited until my life was more stable. Pets are for LIFE.
